Why wouldn't you want to trek in Croatia?  The climate, mountains, forest, coastline, national parks, people, food and culture are something to behold.  Croatia is one of the most beautiful countries in Eastern Europe.

Trekking in Croatia is unbelievable and the mountains of Paklenica National Park rise strikingly from the sea to over 5,500ft - only a few kilometres from the Adriatic.

Velebit is the largest mountain range in Croatia and Vaganski Vrh (1767m) is the highest peak, standing proud above the seaside town of Starigrad.

Croatia is a haven for the outdoor enthusiast, not only offering spectacular trekking, but also white water rafting, rock climbing and sea kayaking.

Into The Outside's CROATIAN ADVENTURE TREK begins in Zadar where you will spend a night in the ancient Roman city and experience the sights and sounds of its medievial town, people and waterfront.  In the morning you will travel to the gate of Paklenica National Park and begin the trek.

The trek starts on Day 2. Carrying all of our kit and food required for our expedition we will follow the trail through Anića Kuk, a spectacular deep gorge, walls towering hundreds of feet above.  This path will lead us through lush natural forest and along a dry river bed at the bottom of the canyon.

The first day's hike will take us around 5 hours where we will finish at our base for the night - the Planinarski Dom hut.  This awesome old lodge is situated in the middle of the forest and has great facilities to rest and enjoy a cooked meal before the main hike.

We will rise early on Day 3 and cook breakfast accompanied by some strong Croatian coffee.  Once we get the group kit ready we will begin our overnight expedition to the 1,767 metre summit of Vaganski Vrh.

The trail takes us through deep deciduous forest and then onwards above the canopy.  We step out upon open bare limestone cliffs and weave along beautiful scenic paths and witness the huge striking rock faces of Babin Vrh (the Grandmother's Peak 1,741m).

From here we will cross the grasslands to our overnight camp at the Ivine Vodice hut, a fantastic looking triangular shape building that wouldn't look out of place in a cowboy movie!  We will cook and eat out in the open, staying in the hut (if there is space) or bivi out under the stars.  It is a wonderfully remote spot where we can rest, refuel and watch the night's sky - a true wilderness.

Day 4 is another early start. After breakfast we will pack up camp and begin our ascent of Vaganski Vrh.  Summit day will be long and arduous.  It is a simple enough ascent from the Ivine Vodice hut but the weather could change quickly, blowing in famous Bora (high winds), along with its mighty mist at any moment.

The view from Vaganski Vrh, the highest point in Paklenica, is simply breathtaking.  The sprawling forest and peaks to the Adriatic Sea and islands, the view goes on and on.  At the top there is a small book for the keen mountaineer to sign, a summit cross and plate with the iconic white and red circle of the Croatian trail markers.

Once we have reached the summit the descent is the hardest part of the hike minding where to place your feet and not eyeing up the magnificent views is a very tall order indeed.  It will take us over 5 hours to make the journey back to the Planinarski Dom hut for a wash, cooked meal and a much needed beer!

After breakfast on Day 5 we will hike out of the park to Starigrad to check out our coastal campsite and relax by the sea. Here there will be a chance to charter a boat and explore the coast. The evening will be spent relaxing and having a meal.

The next morning we will spend rock climbing in the mighty Anića Kuk Canyon. After which we will return to the ancient Roman city of Zadar and watch the sunset, marvel at the Church of St Donat, listen to the magical sea organ and watch the local people swimming on the waterfront.

Day 7 is up to you. There will be the option of going white water rafting on the Zrmanja river. A ferry ride to the Island of Dugi Otok to explore the small island's salt lake via sea kayak or a chance to visit the Krka waterfalls returning to Zadar for one final night.
