Have you ever wanted to truly experience the wild, stare up at inspiring mountain peaks in every direction, swim in crystal waters deep inside a limestone canyon or feel the rush of white water rafting in one of the worlds deepest gorges? Then INTO THE OUTSIDE's Montenegrin Adventure Trek is for you! You will have never experienced so many wonders in one of the Balkans most beautiful countries.
Montenegro is unspoilt and host to some of the most outstanding views and rugged mountains in the whole of Europe. Situated to the South of Croatia, Montenegro is rich in history, vibrant in culture, friendly inviting people and home of the best mountains, canyons and forest in the western world.
INTO THE OUTSIDE's Montenegrin Adventure squeezes as much wonder out of the country as can be imagined and offers the ardent trekker, explorer and adventurer a trip of a lifetime.
Montenegro is a haven for the outdoor enthusiast, not only offering spectacular trekking but also white water rafting, biking, canyoneering, kayaking and climbing.
INTO THE OUTSIDE's Montenegrin Adventure actually begins in Dubrovnik, Croatia. From here we drive across the border into Montenegro and begin our journey into the Bay of Kotor passing magnificent scenery and the ancient coastal villages of Herci Novi and Pesat before settling for our first night in Kotor.
Kotor is a hub of activity from fishing, watersports and markets. The ancient fortified walls light up at night and is the setting for a good evening meal, drink and chat before heading into the mountains.
Day 2 begins with breakfast and a swim in the bay before we gear up and take the spectacular mountain roads toward Nikšić, Monenegro's second biggest city and home of Nikšićko, the country's favourite beer. From Nikšić we drive into the wilderness and one of Montenegro's most beautiful plateaus opens up and you get your first glimpse of the mighty peaks the country has to offer.
We leave the car and hike to our mountain hut for the night, perched on the edge of a cliff. Once we have organised our rooms we take light weight packs and trek into Kapetanovo Jezero - Captain's Lake. The lake is said to be slap bang in the middle of Montenegro and is 4km from our hut.
Kapetanovo Jezero is placed high in a col and is ideal for a swim but watch out for the Crayfish. A friendly chap named Dragan will be there to offer us Raikia and a cold drink! This is where we will experience the countries mountain people, friendly farmers who all know each other! We hike back to our mountain hut and enjoy a local meal of bean stew, sausages and cheese!
On Day 3 we will wake in our mountain cabin and have a locally cooked breakfast of eggs and bacon and strong coffee. We will say goodbye to our hosts and walk back to our transport. It's farewell to Kapitanz Gerseo as we begin our journey to Durmitor National Park and the home of Bobatov Kuk, at 2,522m/8,274ft, Montenegro's highest peak and some of the most rugged terrain in Europe. You will have never seen peaks like it. We will hike into the mountain and spend the night camping in the wilderness.
On Day 4 we will wake early and summit Mt Bobatov Kuk as the sunrises. From here you are on the roof of Montenegro and can see for miles in every direction into Croatia, Bosnia and Albania. After our summit we will descend back to the tents, pack up and walk out.
In the afternoon the adreneline doesn't stop there! After lunch we make a short trip to the Komarnica river and the home of the Nevidio Canyon. An 'artwork of nature' and the 'last unexplored canyon in Europe' are just a few expressions bestowed upon the beautiful place.
At 3.5km long and narrowing to just 1m the Nevidio canyon is a thrill ride with a multitude of slides and squeezes and an 11 metre jump near the end! It's full of fresh salmon and crystal clear waters and will potentially be the best four hours of your life! After all of the craziness we will be able to relax that evening in the mountain village of Jablak.
On Day 5 we will visit the Durmitor's famous Black Lake in the morning and then go White Water Rafting on one of the world most spectacular waterways - The Tara River.
The Tara canyon is 1300ft deep, by comparison the Grand Canyon is only 200 feet deeper! After Rafting we will make our way to the gateway to Lake Skadar, the beautiful town on Virpaza.
We will begin day 6 in Virpaza for breakfast and make our way into the mountains for a light bike ride and trek into the Dupilo Valley. A lovely forest where we will discover the secret waterfalls and pools. Perfect for a wild swim! Watch our for the snakes!
In the afternoon we will jump on a boat cruise and take in the splendour of Lake Skadar, the largest lake on the Balkan peninsular, sailing around the islands and visiting Grmožur, the former fortress and old prison. By late afternoon we travel to the atmospheric southern town of Ulcinj on the Albanian boarder. The mountain road takes us high above the lake for a sublime photo shoot opportunity. We will witness the beautiful sunset in the old Pirate bay and soak in the atmosphere while the town comes to life in the evening!
We will begin day 7 with a swim in a hidden cove below the walled town and then continue our journey to Kotor up the Adriatic coastline stopping at Budva (a mini Dubrovnik with less tourists) for a cold drink and a wander. Finally we return to Kotor for a last evening together and meal in the walled city.
